Welcome to the first edition of The Weekend Report by The Az Sports Guru. Each Monday I will recap the weekend of sports as seen through the eyes of an average sports fan, The Az Sports Guru.
On Saturday we saw a great day of sports. What made it even better was the fact that none of the three major sports were involved. Without football, basketball or relevant baseball we still had an action packed Saturday.
It started with Premier Boxing on NBC. Robert Guerrero took in Aron Martinez in a thrilling 10 round fight in California. While Guerrero's performance was lackluster or even terrible he still pulled out the decision. Aron, spelled with just one a, needed more than just another a to upset the more popular fighter. He needed just one more big punch to go with his knockdown and he would have pulled off the upset.
After boxing was over most people kept the TV on NBC to watch the much anticipated Belmont Steaks. With a victory American Pharoah would win the Triple Crown, which means winning the three major horse races in the same year. People that don't ever watch horse racing tuned in just to see if the horse could accomplish the feat that hasn't happened since 1978. American Pharoah did not disappoint. In fact he won pretty easily.
Saturday also saw another boxing match between Daniel Geale and Miguel Cotto. This was a much anticipated fight that ended early. Cotto got the fourth round knock after dominating the entire night. This victory sets up a showdown with Saul "Canelo" Alvarez. A fight that will generate large support from the average boxing fan.
Sunday saw game 2 of The NBA Finals. Just like game 1 we got to watch another epic battle they may go down in history as the greatest Finals ever. The game went into overtime, this time with Cleveland coming out on top 95-93. LeBron James led all scorers with 39 points.
Overall this was a great weekend for sports. Check out the new segment ever Monday to keep informed of the weekends sports results.
